In the Pit
We are products of the ’70s and ’80s. Some of us are even products of the ’50s and ’60s. Back in the day, we loved to dance. In the Bay Area, we couldn’t miss a Thursday through Sunday night at Desperados, The Trocadero or Pleasuredome. Of course, you had to be seen at the I-Beam on Sunday afternoon, and everyone knew that at any moment Sylvester and Tons of Fun could come strutting through to grace us with their presence. Flag dancers, crazy lights, disco beats, sex on the dance floor… now those were the days!
Speaking of those days, a big hell yeah goes to Dreamgirls for winning the Golden Globe. Actually, three Globes when you add Jennifer and Eddie into the mix. Dreamgirls was one of the best things I’ve experienced in a long time. I also loved Idlewild for the singing and dancing. You know we love that singing and dancing, but not every reviewer does.
We, the new “20-somethings,” remember those days of singing and dancing, and we’re bringing ’em back because that’s who we are! Last month, we did the bump and grind to the nasty beats of Peter Barona. And next month, the “hunks who funk” will give it to us Megawoof! style at Rich’s on March 24. If you’ve never heard of Megawoof!, you’d better check it out at www.megawoof.com. Anyone who was at Lazy Bear Weekend knows what I’m talking about. If you weren’t there, then you’ve got some making up to do ’cause Daz and Diddy of Megawoof! will be in the hiz…iz…ouse!
Daz and Diddy don’t disappoint! Here is an interview with the “hunks who funk.” Meet Megawoof!
Rocket: What is Megawoof!?
Daz and Diddy: Megawoof! is a dance event in London based around a unique sound and made up of a crowd of guys who enjoy each other’s company.
Rocket: Who are the men behind Megawoof!?
D&D: The men behind Megawoof! are two promoters and artists/DJs called Daz and Didz., who are better known as Daz Saund and Diddy.
Rocket: How did you come up with the concept?
D&D: The concept arose accidentally when we were at a friend’s birthday party in a small venue. While at the party, the venue owner mentioned that he had a club space upstairs that had free nights available. We were already interested in playing good underground house music to the kind of guys that we were attracted to. We nipped upstairs and had a look and liked what we saw. We had a quick think and decided that it would be fun to put on a party Sunday night. The party was so successful that people asked us to keep going.
Rocket: What has been the response to Megawoof! in Europe?
D&D: Megawoof! is huge in Europe. We have played in Spain, Germany, Holland and Turkey. We get a lot of guys booking their holidays and their trips to London to coincide with Megawoof! parties. When we have taken the club abroad, it has been massive.
Rocket: What has been the response in the U.S.?
D&D: Taking Megawoof! to the states has been amazing. The last party at Lazy Bear was, as they say, off the hook! Every time we come over, we find that more and more people [are] traveling from further a field as they have heard how good the night is.
Rocket: How is your music different from music in the U.S.?
D&D: The music we play is, well, we would say funkier, rhythmic and warmer. There is a progression which develops from one DJ to another. We have a clear plan of how the night proceeds, and each DJ tries to add to the overall flow of the night; it’s about creating a journey that leads and surprises you at the same time. The U.S. sound is much more aggressive than the Megawoof! sound.
Rocket: How is your visual show different from others?
D&D: The Megawoof! visuals are live interaction with the music. They are always imaginative and masculine. We make the images and clips ourselves and constantly add to them. Because we DJ and VJ ourselves, we really know the music well and love using the projections to take the club to another level.
Rocket: What makes Megawoof! different from other dances?
D&D: I guess that we just enjoy what we do. We’re well known as successful artists, and so it’s the music that is the key.
Rocket: How do you see the future of Megawoof!?
D&D:The future of Megawoof! is wherever it takes us. We don’t plan too far ahead as we like to keep things fresh and vibrant. We love taking the party around the world and having a good time, and playing out music to new crowds is one of our prime motivations. We have just set up a new record label for the DJs in the club and the local scene.
That’s all for now. Mark your calendars. Get out and get busy In The Pit! And remember, my deadline is two weeks before the issue hits. Give it to me at inthepitsd@aol.com.
