The big chill: Arctic Babylon storms into San Diego
Things are heating up in the arctic this summer, and we’re not just talking about Al Gore movies. Something much sexier than global warming is headed our way this San Diego Pride weekend.
An icy blizzard is brewing as Midori® presents its Arctic Babylon Tour, which will storm into San Diego on Friday, July 20. Club Montage and the Toronto-based Embrace Productions are teaming up to bring the national tour to our city, transforming Montage into a sexy winter wonderland with over-the-top visuals and décor, including floor to ceiling icicles, glaciers and, of course, snow-frosted dancers. Miami’s award-winning RKM (www.rkmfutureboys.com), the team who has designed and installed all past Babylon Tour events, will weave its magic once again for this new production.
“I was intrigued by the concept of Arctic Babylon from the beginning,” said Kidd of RKM Productions. “It challenged us to explore our imaginations in exciting new ways. We can proudly say the scenes we have created are whimsical, dramatic and awe-inspiring. Midori presents Arctic Babylon will be more than a party, it will be an experience worthy of this important Pride weekend.”
Adam Gill, president of Embrace Productions agrees, calling the tour the most visually stunning of all past Babylon adventures. “We wanted to offer something extraordinary for San Diego Pride,” he said. “The production of Arctic Babylon has all the excitement of a Disneyworld ride. It will astound partygoers.”
In addition to its visuals, Gill also knew he would need to bring in one of the hottest young DJs on the circuit. He accomplished that goal with Roland Belmares.
“I’m always thrilled when Roland is playing a Babylon event,” Gill said. “He’s fresh and exciting. He brings all the power and action that you’d ever want from a DJ, plus he adds a big musical edge to the event.”
Belmares aims to live up to the faith Gill has placed in him on this stop of the 17-city tour. “It’s my job to give San Diego’s dancing queens something to talk about,” he said via phone from a hotel in Chicago, where he was spinning a Pride event. “The sets may be snow cap mountains and glaciers, but you can bet my beats will heat up the room.”
Belmares will be accompanied by the RKM Future Boys who will also perform at the event. “Our performance is very Cirque du Soleil,” explained Kidd. “It’s mystifying, extravagant and maybe just a little bit trippy.”
The Arctic Babylon Tour builds on the momentum of the highly successful Babylon Tours of the past four years: 2003’s original “Queer As Folk – Babylon Tour,” 2004’s “Queer As Folk – Future Babylon Tour,” 2005’s “Queer As Folk – Ancient Babylon Tour” and last year’s “City of Babylon Tour.” In all, Babylon has enjoyed a total of 80 events with a combined attendance of more than 150,000 fans.
“The Babylon tours began as an extension of Showtime’s ‘Queer as Folk,’” explained Gill. For those who have may have forgotten, the club in the show where the gang hung out was Babylon. “The show may have ended, but the party lives on.”
You can thank the tour’s sponsors for that. Without the support of the television series, the tour has depended on outside corporations to continue the fun.
Embrace is thrilled to have Midori return as the title sponsor for its fourth consecutive year. “Midori’s commitment to the gay market and The Babylon Tour has been extraordinary,” Gill continued. “They truly are the reason that we have been able to continue the tradition of the first national gay party tour.”
Midori even inspired the theme of this year’s party. “They actually approached us about an ice-theme party. We thought it was perfect for the summer.”
With all the heat expected from the performers, it might appear ironic that the production chose the Arctic theme. Nevertheless, look for ice to be projected throughout Montage, that is if it doesn’t melt before it makes its way to the dance floor.
Arctic Babylon takes place at Club Montage, 2028 Hancock St., on Friday, July 20. For additional information, visit www.enterbabylon.com.
