On the Beat
Chi Chi LaRue
Everyone knows Chi Chi LaRue’s talents as a director of porn films. Now the world is learning of her talents as an in-demand DJ, whose fresh style and approach are as unique as the 6-foot-1-inch transvestite herself.
Rocket: How did you get started DJing?
Chi Chi LaRue: I’ve loved music forever – it’s always been in me. I always liked taking over the stereo at parties, and my DJing is the natural evolution of that. It’s really cool to go into a club and be able to be in control of the music; to free everyone from the usual five-hour pots-and-pans marathon and play real party music: music with words, hip-hop, Cher, Madonna, KylieKISS.
Rocket: As in the KISS?
LaRue: Yep. I love rock ’n’ roll and I like to share that side of me. I’m even starting a rock ’n’ roll club called Dirty Deeds. It’s at Fubar in West Hollywood. I’m co-hosting that with Michael Schmidt. He’s most famous for his rock ’n’ roll club in N.Y.C., Squeezebox. He’s also a fashion designer for the new Madonna tour, has done clothes for Cher, Pink, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ozzy Osbourne. We both love rock ’n’ roll. KISS, Judas Priest, The Strokes, The Runaways, Joan Jett, Hole and Marilyn Manson.
Rocket: How do you mix something like 50 Cent into Marilyn Manson?
LaRue: I’m not a mixer – I don’t use headphones. I’m not necessarily a DJ in that sense. I’m more of a party player. In rock ’n’ roll clubs I slam tracks together and do mashups you would never expect, like The Sex Pistols and Madonna!
Rocket: When did you start DJing?
Rascal Video exclusive Tyler Riggs will be at Bacchus House’s ‘It’s Raining Men’ wet underwear contest on Thursday, June 15.
LaRue: Six months ago! I’ve played Berlin and just played the Chicago Military Ball at International Mr. Leather. I’m going to Salt Lake City, Utah, this weekend.
Rocket: What’s been your most memorable gig to date?
LaRue: Well, it’s a toss-up between Berlin and Rim Job (L.A.). I played a cross between rock and dance. That night, I was on fire. They always respond to Madonna. And I am constantly playing things no one else has. I actually have an Anna Nicole Smith track called “My Heart Belongs To Daddy” that I got in Paris. People love it! And Limp Wristed is another find, a cross between RuPaul and Rick James.
Rocket: What’s your dream gig?
LaRue: I played the VIP room at the White Party and that was pretty cool. My dream gig would be something like Elton John’s post-Oscar party, where I can play more European stuff like Le Tigre and Gunther. It’s cool to introduce people to new music.
Rocket: What is your all-time favorite song?
LaRue: “Cherry Bomb” by The Runaways. It’s kind of like my theme song. In high school I discovered them by accident in a discount bin in my hometown of Hibbing, Minn. The girls looked all punked out. I love chick rock. I completely fell in love with their three-chord, trash-canny sound. I’ve loved “Cherry Bomb” for over 30 years.
Rocket: Who are some artists and tracks to look out for?
LaRue: Paris Hilton’s album is going to be the hit of the summer. “Turn It Up” is hot. Gunther is another. He’s very tongue-in-cheek, kind of like the straight version of Gay Pimp. Another to watch out for is Angels and Airwaves, a newer alternative-rock group that is amazing. “The Adventure” is their new song. It’s really good. Tiga’s “You’re Gonna Want Me.” Oh! And the new Bananarama “Look On The Floor,” it’s so good – old Bananarama/ “Cruel Summer” feel but with an updated, electro-pop feel. I’m also lovin’ Debby Holiday’s “Bring It On (Scotty K Radio Mix).”
Rocket: What can we expect at Bacchus House on June 15?
LaRue: A little bit of everything! I really want to mix it up. I hope people don’t freak out if I put on a hip-hop song or rock song. I want to bring my eclectic feel and let them experience it. I won’t take requests, but I will take suggestions!
Be sure to catch the San Diego debut of Chi Chi LaRue’s one-of-a-kind performance as part of Bacchus House’s “It’s Raining Men” wet underwear contest with Rascal Video exclusive Tyler Riggs on Thursday, June 15. $1 well drinks all night.
