Circuit DJ underground railroad
With L.A. Pride behind us, we’re heading into full-on Pride season. Three of the biggest and hottest – New York, Atlanta and San Francisco Pride – are all happening the same weekend, June 23-25.
For those of you who don’t have a ticket to the circuit DJ underground railroad, let me outline some highpoints so you can choose your party city accordingly.
Destination: New York
DJ Alyson Calagna
I love New York. And so do party promoters. Kicking off the weekend’s festivities is the Icon Pride NYC 2006 on Friday at Octagon with DJs Alyson Calagna and Zach Stowers. Stowers has an unbelievable high-energy style that will start the party right. Calagna has been building quite a reputation across the country and this is her debut as an N.Y.C. headliner.
Leave some money for cab fare because Friday is also NRG at Pacha. DJ Roland Belmares will be delivering his unique blend of high energy, tribal vocals. And legendary producer/DJ Tony Moran promises to bring it home with his own personal style and private, one-of-a-kind remixes.
DJ Tony Moran
Saturday at The Roxy, resident DJ Peter Rauhofer holds court as he takes the Pride crowd through a mystifying journey of tribal beats and electro bleeps as only this world-famous DJ/producer can.
More than 7,000 are expected to attend Sunday’s “Dance on the Pier,” which many consider the crowning point of the N.Y.C. Pride festivities. Circuit up-and-coming DJ Demarko is opening, and veteran Susan Morabito is closing. This is the party’s 20th anniversary, so nostalgia and fanfare will add to the good energy. The official Dance on the Pier after party “Happy Camper!” is at Sol from 10:30 p.m. until the last dancer exits the floor (one of the reasons I love New York). Happy Camper! features DJ Phillip Kimball.
DJ Joe Gauthraux
Sunday at Spirit, “Gay Summer Camp” counselors/DJs Junior Vasquez and Escape will help you learn the ropes. Escape cites Vasquez as one of his biggest influences. He used to stand on the dance floor at Twilo for hours and study the master. Seeing these two together should be quite a lesson in dance-floor drama.
Sunday’s “Classic Tea” at SBNY (Splash) has diversely talented DJ Joe Gauthreaux, who was named Out magazine’s “Hottest DJ of 2005.” “After-Tea” features long-time and very popular Splash resident DJ Max Rodriguez.
DJ Roland
Speaking of Splash, for those looking for a darker, tech edge on Friday night, DJ Alex Lauterstein is showcased in the “Alex In Wonderland” party. Alex is also at the helm of the “Sea Tea/Gay Pride Cruise” on Sunday.
Later Sunday evening, DJ Paulo headlines “The Return to Avalon” party. Avalon, formerly known as Limelight, has been transformed into one of the most cutting-edge nightclubs in the world. Out of the ashes of the previous church, a modern club design combined with state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems has developed the perfect backdrop for Paulo’s dark tribal sound.
DJ Phillip Kimball
DJs Ralphi Rosario and Abel (a.k.a. Rosabel) tear it up at the “Alegria Pride” party at Crobar, which stretches into the not-so-wee hours of Monday morning.
Destination: Atlanta
DJ Junior Vasquez
Atlanta Pride gets bigger and better each year. WETbar is party central as usual. Thursday, June 22, it’s got DJ Joe Gauthreaux on the main floor and DJ Angelo Kortez in the SKYbar. I’ve been snatching up a lot of Angelo’s latest remixes. If you’re in Atlanta on Thursday, don’t miss him!
Friday night, DJ Manny Lehman kicks the weekend into full gear. And epic DJ/producer Eddie Baez keeps things moving nicely on Saturday with his throbbing house beats. For more information and tickets, visit www.wetbaratlanta.com.
DJ Demarko
The Luau event at Park Tavern on Saturday serves up versatile, circuit-favorite DJ Tracy Young and Atlanta’s own DJ Brian Beck.
Southern sister Lydia Prim heats things up over at Amsterdam both Saturday and Sunday. If you haven’t heard her, now is the time. It’s at Pride time that she shines the brightest.
DJ Tracy Young
Club Eleven50 has Alyson Calagna opening for the white-hot Spanish DJ/remixing duo Chus & Ceballos on Saturday.
Destination: San Francisco
DJ Paulo
San Francisco has three major parties Pride weekend and all are on Sunday. 715 Harrison has hometown favorite Phil B. flexing his harder side at the “Aftershock Returns” party.
Kimberly S is at Ruby Skye spinning her signature blend of various killer genres.
DJ Peter Rauhaufer
Jamie J. Sanchez headlines the “Pleasuredome” party at the Porn Palace with his pumpin’ tribal vocal house style.
I’ll have a detailed write-up of San Diego Pride’s lineup in the next couple of issues.
Don’t forget to check out DJ Eddie X on June 24 and DJ Tracy Young July 8 at Bacchus House.
