Bacchus House party scores guest DJs from L.A. and Frisco March 24
On Saturday, March 24, Bacchus House will celebrate its Oasis Bacchanal party. Before you get too excited, though, don’t focus too much on the “anal” part of bacchanal. Bacchanal is just another way of saying drunken revelry.
The event will feature DJs Luke Johnstone and Rob Kaftan – both of whom have worked at the popular San Francisco dance club Mezzanine – spinning music together. These two red-hot DJs are coming to San Diego and will be in town only for this one performance.
Johnstone got his start at Bump, the legendary San Francisco afterhours, where he honed his DJ skills on everything from house music to uplifting vocals to progressive beats. With this variety of music in his repertoire, it’s obvious that he likes to have fun with his music.
While he calls San Francisco home, Johnstone is originally from the U.K. and continues to travel and work around the world, which helps bring an international flavor to his sets. Recent gigs have included Raw Hide and ARQ in Australia, Sweat in Singapore, China Pride in Hong Kong, the legendary Crash in London, Hydrate in Chicago and Size in Los Angeles.
The Chicago-born Kaftan shares Johnstone’s passion for dance music. Kaftan credits the likes of DJ Junior Vasquez and Victor Calderone for his musical inspiration. After becoming a DJ, Kaftan relocated to San Francisco in 1999. He discovered that San Francisco is a very saturated market for DJs, but he took the advice of friend Phil B, who said, “Focus on mastering your craft and good things will happen to you.”
And that he did, later landing a gig at Metropolis, a club located at space 550 in the warehouse district. With his foot now firmly planted in the door of the local music scene, Kaftan stated getting booked in nightclubs across the city and even began to tour the country with guest DJ gigs at NoiseLab, Mass and Timberline in Seattle, The Maze and Level2 in Hawaii and even Club Montage here in San Diego.
More recently, Johnstone has been the resident DJ at San Francisco’s ultra-hip nightclub Industry at Mezzanine.
It’s a real treat for fans to be able to enjoy two popular DJs teaming up, but working with another DJ is actually very tricky according to Johnstone. Unless the DJs know each other very well and have respect for their different styles, it can become a “too many cooks in the kitchen” sort of problem.
That isn’t a problem with these two, however. “I love working with Ron,” Johnstone said. “We have very complimentary styles, which makes it easier to work together. Unfortunately, I don’t get to work with him as often since he moved down to Los Angeles.”
Johnstone also lamented that while he really likes San Diego, he doesn’t get to come down here as often as he would like. “I was down there for Pride last year and would love to have the opportunity to perform there again,” Johnstone said. “The people down there are wonderful.”
Luke Johnstone and Rob Kaftan will be performing at Bacchus House from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 24. For more information, visit www.bacchushouse.com.
