Success in anything requires a plan. Think of it as a roadmap for getting from point A to point B. Whether it’s studying to become a lawyer or saving money to purchase a house, you have to outline the specific steps or mini milestones needed to reach your destination. The same concept applies to fitness goals. You should have a definite goal in mind. Is it weight loss, muscle gain, toning? I often see people aimlessly wandering around the workout floor, hopping on machines simply because they’re open. Having a roadmap will make your workouts more efficient and your goals easier to obtain.
Find your passion
What’s your primary motivation? Write it down and find pictures that inspire you and remind you of what you want. Hang those pictures on your refrigerator, bathroom mirror or somewhere you’ll see them frequently. Use these visual reminders to strengthen your resolve and drive you to succeed.
Determine your starting point
A fitness assessment with a personal trainer allows you to establish and quantify goals. Your trainer then creates a program for you based on your evaluation and goals. Fitness assessments usually test your weight, blood pressure, body fat, strength, aerobic capacity and flexibility, and take body measurements. It’s important to take that physical “snapshot” of your fitness levels when first starting out in order to better measure your progress.
List goals and mini milestones
Goals must be measurable and attainable. Set small goals each month and track your progress against those mini milestones. You can have your trainer give you progress checks at each mini milestone to track and record your successes. Focusing on your accomplishments, not failures, will keep you motivated and strong.
Plan your workouts three to five days in advance
This gives you structure to stay focused and integrate fitness into your lifestyle. It allows for flexibility when “life happens.” Be efficient with your time and track your progress with a workout card. Knowing in advance what exercises to do will give you something to look forward to as well as make your workouts quicker and smoother.
Find your support system
Surround yourself with people who support, encourage and challenge you. Having a personal trainer or a favorite fitness instructor in your corner can really help integrate your goals with your lifestyle to achieve results.
Don’t forget your passion
When you get busy or feel lethargic, your reasons for exercising will get you back into the club.
Set yourself up for success and take a little time to draft your roadmap. Using a personal trainer is an excellent way to get started. He or she can establish your starting points, design a plan that fits your lifestyle and work schedule, and motivate and encourage you to meet your goals. Whatever route you take in your fitness program, planning is everything!
