On the Beat
Kimberly S.
Surfer, martial artist, devoted partner, self-manager, traveler… the term “no fear” applies to DJ Kimberly S., and her penchant for thrills and adventure come through loud and clear in her music.
“If you’ve ever heard one of my sets, you know that I’m anything but predictable,” says Kimberly, who already has one Centaur release, Global Groove, with another one on the way as well as the upcoming CD One Mighty Weekend.
“I get to know my audience right away, though, and I’ll play some progressive, some tribal, some great vocals, maybe even some trance,” Kimberly says.
For all the hard work and ever-changing schedule, one thing about Kimberly is consistent: her genuine mix of confidence and modesty. No shrinking violet, Kimberly has clearly taken to the decks with the best of them.
That said, she’s definitely a survivor. Recent neck surgery may have stunted the regularity of her beloved sparring (she’s a second-degree black belt), but she’s still always looking for the next adventure.
“I’m back and I’m training hard and teaching. I’ll never be able to get hit in the head again, though,” Kimberly says, adding that she recently conquered Asia with gigs in Manila, Taiwan, the Philippines and Taipei, a destiny of sorts given her extracurricular activities.
Kimberly is a devout follower of Eastern thought, something that translates into her music and daily life as a martial-arts expert and teacher. Her love affair with Asia and the stealth with which she has managed to penetrate the Far East and cause her fan base to swell is no coincidence. She’s a renaissance woman in every sense.
Kimberly’s vast musical knowledge can be attributed to her 13 years of firsthand exposure to all genres of music as a former manager and buyer for several retail music chains. Mixing soulful house, pulsing tribal beats, trance and vocal club anthems (an experience she regards as deeply spiritual), Kimberly began as a local sensation, quickly rising to stardom on the national and international club scene. From film premier parties in Hollywood to the biggest clubs in New York City, Miami, Mexico City and throughout Asia, Kimberly is always at home behind the decks regardless of the venue. In fact, Kimberly doesn’t necessarily have a preference when it comes to rooms – she’ll do big or small and fit her sets to match the mood of the crowd.
“I’ll do both, and it’s a nice balance. To be honest, I can be a true chameleon,” Kimberly says. “The color of my sets changes with the vibe of the crowd.”
Unlike many of her contemporaries, Kimberly, in addition to her extraordinary personal life, is a star professionally. Beyond her international status as a wanted jock, The Advocate listed her on its “2001 Innovators” list of trendsetters in the gay and lesbian community. She has appeared on the cover of dozens of newspapers and magazines, and made her TV debut in 2002, portraying a popular club DJ on the hit WB series “Charmed.” She was also selected as a celebrity spokes model for John Paul Mitchell Systems, appearing in a national color photo spread for the world-renowned hair care line.
DJ Kimberly S. will be bringing her star quality back to San Diego on Saturday, May 12, at Rich’s.
